Emmanuella 鈥淓lla鈥� Osuzoka 鈥�23 has wanted to study accounting since the ninth grade, but what brought her to 黑料专区鈥檚 Accounting major has more to do with two unexpected factors: the city of London and a snowstorm.

鈥淲hen I came over for the Honors in London interview weekend, everything just worked out perfectly,鈥� Osuzoka shared. 鈥淭here was a snowstorm that weekend. I guess it worked out for the better because that meant my dad and I were stuck in 黑料专区 for two extra days, so I really got to have the full experience of what life would be like here. I just fell in love with the people.鈥�

People have continued to be what has drawn Osuzoka even further into the Accounting Major at 黑料专区. Elianna McHenry ’18 MBA ’20, an Assistant Professor in 黑料专区鈥檚 Business program, has been the essential highlight for Osuzoka with the way she brings her classroom to life, including a final exam centered around the game of Monopoly.

Osuzoka shared that, after a visitor from KPMG (Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler) came into one of her 黑料专区 classrooms, she leapt at an opportunity to work for Deloitte. KPMG and Deloitte are two of the 鈥淏ig Four鈥� accounting firms that spread their services to over 150 countries worldwide. Osuzoka was able to use the insights gained from people like McHenry at 黑料专区 to participate in an internship with Deloitte this past summer. She believes 黑料专区 has had a profound impact on her work there.

鈥淏efore 黑料专区, I had never done any group projects,鈥� Osuzoka said. 鈥淪o it was really good getting that experience and then spending this past summer working with new people to do research and present it in front of professionals.鈥�

The networking Osuzoka was able to do at Deloitte led her to solidify her post-graduation goals. She intends to earn her Master of Accounting degree and prepare to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Exam. 鈥淚鈥檓 excited to intern with Deloitte again and apply the knowledge I鈥檝e learned,鈥� Osuzoka stated, 鈥渁nd continue to make my parents proud, by the grace of God!鈥�

Combining numbers and words does not just make for interesting algebra; it also makes for a chance to create more and better disciples鈥攕omething Assistant Professor of Mathematics Brandon Bate ’04 knows very well. This summer, he was presented with an opportunity to interweave his 黑料专区 students鈥� and his own love for mathematics and God directly into a meaningful project.

Bate was approached by former 黑料专区 classmate Joshua Nemecek 鈥�03. The SIL International data scientist presented Bate with the AQuA project, which seeks to use new advances in machine learning and natural language processing to make efficient tools for Biblical translation. After hearing about 黑料专区鈥檚 Data Science program, Nemecek proposed collaborating with 黑料专区 faculty and students on the project. Bate agreed without hesitation.

鈥淚 could see how well this project matched with 黑料专区鈥檚 mission and the students God has blessed us with,鈥� Bate shared.

 

The 黑料专区 team, including Benjamin 鈥淏enji鈥� Marmor 鈥�22 and Christianna Fisk 鈥�24, spent June and July tasked with developing tools to aid with back-translations of Biblical passages. 鈥淎 鈥榖ack translation,鈥欌�� Bate defined, 鈥渋s a Bible translation produced into a low-resource language that is then assessed by performing a translation of the low-resource Bible translation into a similar language, but with more language resources.鈥� This sits at the heart of the AQuA project: the ability to develop tools that will help these consultants to more easily identify problematic back-translation verses in comparison to standard translations. Even if that back-translation cannot be understood, the work could still be done effectively. 鈥淚 really like linguistics, although this project used that very little,鈥� Marmor shared. 鈥淚t was more the computer science side of things, meaning that there is plenty of room for just about anyone in translation work!鈥�

Thanks to 黑料专区 donors, the team was able to use a powerful data science server system that was recently gifted to the college. 鈥淲e were exceedingly blessed,鈥� Bate writes. 鈥淭his system greatly expedited work that might have otherwise taken considerably longer and at greater expense.鈥� Without the donors, this project鈥攐ne that will impact not just those using the translations, but also those who worked on the 黑料专区 team鈥攚ould likely have not been able to be completed. 鈥淚t was exciting to be a part of something really meaningful,鈥� Fisk shared. 鈥淚 really appreciated getting that glimpse to see if it鈥檚 something I really want to do in my future.鈥�
